Principal's Message August 9, 2016

Dear Gates Parents,

Welcome back! It is hard to believe that the summer is coming to an end and that the 
new school year is just a few weeks away!

All parents will be able to log onto Powerschool on Thursday, August 18th to update their online emergency card and to view the name of their child’s classroom teacher.  On Thursday, August 25th a complete class list for each grade will be posted on Powerschool. Please take this time to thoroughly update all contact numbers so that we can reach you in case there is an emergencyIf you have moved, please update your new address and remember to contact transportation.  Have you forgotten your password? No worries!  You can still go onto the Parent Portal and click on a box, which will send you to a link to reset your password.  If you need further assistance, feel free to email Louise in the office and she will be happy to help you. 

We have several new staff members that I would like to introduce to you!

Psychologist – Mr. Gregory Wadsworth received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Richmond and his Master of Arts and Educational Specialist degrees in School Psychology from Tufts University.  Mr. Wadsworth completed his practicum experience in the Newton Public Schools and his internship in the Lexington Public Schools.  For the past three years he has worked at the Thomas Prince School, which is a K – 8 school in the Wachusett Regional School District.  Mr. Wadsworth is excited to be joining the Gates School!

Library Media Assistant Mrs. Sheila Magovern has been volunteering at the Merriam School library for the past three years.  In addition to her experience in the library, she has worked as a 4th grade classroom assistant.  Mrs. Magovern has been a regular substitute at all elementary grade levels, including the McT and Merriam libraries. With a passion for books, Mrs. Magovern is beginning her Master of Science in Library Science with a concentration in School Library at Simmons College.

Reading Assistant – Mrs. Melissa Coultas received her Master of Education from Antioch University New England in Keene, New Hampshire.  Mrs. Coultas taught 3rd & 4th grade for 8 years in the Westborough and Wellesley Public Schools.  For the past 8 years, Mrs. Coultas has worked as a math & literacy tutor for students in grades 2 – 5 and is pleased to return to the public school setting.

Math Assistant – Mrs. Lisa Doucette, a former third grade teacher at Gates, rejoined the staff in 2016 as a special education assistant in grades 4 - 6.  Mrs. Doucette has accepted the math assistant position and will be providing math support in the intermediate grade levels.

I am sure you will have an opportunity in the coming weeks to meet our new staff.  I would like to remind everyone that the Gates School is on the early schedule this year, which means that we will begin our day at 8:40 a.m. and dismissal is at 2:50 p.m.  We officially open our doors 15 minutes before the start of the school day at 8:25.  Students who arrive prior to 8:25 are asked to wait outside, unless we have stormy weather.  Please note that students are not supervised until the bell rings at 8:40.  The 1st & 3rd Thursdays (except 9/1) are early dismissal days at 12:20 p.m.  Parent pick-up is located in the 6th grade pod.  Parents will be able to access the 6th grade pod by entering the side door at 2:50, which is the second door on the left side of the building. Our official first day of school is Wednesday, August 31st. Thursday, Sept. 1st is also a FULL DAY.  There is no school on Friday, Sept. 2nd or Monday, Sept. 5th.

Finally, the Back-To-School-Nights have been scheduled for September 27th & 28th.  Please check the Gates homepage for grade specific times. The Gates website has been updated with lots of important information and dates, so please check it out!  Lunches are $2.75 and milk is $.50.  For additional information regarding lunches & food service please check out the following link:
