Principal's Message August 15, 2019

Dear Gates Parents,

Welcome back! It is hard to believe that the summer is coming to an end and that the new school year is just a few weeks away.  I am very pleased to share that families will not need to purchase student school supplies this year. The following classroom donations continue to be appreciated:  facial tissue, sanitizer, wipes and extra snacks. I would suggest you wait to hear from your child’s teacher first before you purchase any donations as it may vary by teacher and grade level.

All parents will be able to log onto Powerschool Parent Portal on Thursday, August 15th to update the online emergency card and to find out the name of your child’s classroom teacher.  On Thursday, August 22nd a complete class list for each classroom will be posted on the portal.  Please take this time to thoroughly update all contact numbers so that you can be reached in case there is an emergency. If you have forgotten your password you can still go onto the Parent Portal and click on a box, which will send you a temporary password.  Once you get a temporary password you will be able to create a new family password. If you need further assistance, feel free to contact the main office and we will be happy to help you.

The official first day of school is Wednesday, August 28th.  The Gates staff will be participating in 2 days of professional development, which takes place on Aug 26th – Aug 27th. The school day begins at 8:50 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:20 p.m.  We will officially open our doors 15 minutes before the start of the school day, which is at 8:35.  Students who arrive prior to 8:35 are asked to wait outside, unless we have stormy weather. Please note that students are not supervised until the bell rings at 8:35.  All Thursdays are early dismissal days at 12:50 p.m.  Parent pick-up is located in the 6th grade pod.  Parents will be able to access the 6th grade pod by entering the side door, which is the second door on the left side of the building at 3:20 or 12:50 on Thursdays. I would ask that you review your child’s schedule to make sure that all of your child’s extra curricular activities are scheduled before or after the school day.  One of the keys to academic success is good attendance with consistent participation in school. Early dismissal and/or late arrival to school due to extra curricular activities is highly discouraged and will continue to be recorded on student report cards. For additional planning purposes you may click here for the 2019-2020 District Calendar.

This year the cost for before school breakfast is $1.75, lunch is $2.75 and milk is $.50.  If you qualify for reduced meals, breakfast costs $.30 and lunch is $.40. For additional information regarding lunches & food service please check out the following link: and the Fall 2019-2020 Newsletter which includes lunch prices, how to prepay lunch online or by check, and a link to the online application for free or reduced lunches. Finally, Open House has been scheduled for September 23rd & 24th.  Please check the new Gates homepage for grade specific times. The Gates website has been updated with lots of important information and dates, so please check it out!  I am looking forward to a new school year! If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact the office and we will be happy to help you out! We look forward to seeing you on August 28th to begin an exciting school year at Gates!
