Principal’s Message

As many of you know, next year I will moving into the role of Principal of students in grades K-3 at the Boardwalk Campus. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to have served as the K–6 Principal at Gates, and I’m incredibly proud of the work we have done as a school community.
While we know there is change ahead, what matters most is our shared commitment to caring for students and nurturing their academic, social, and emotional growth. The Gates' values that have guided our work — kindness, respect, and inclusivity — will continue to guide me as I prepare to support our earliest learners.
In the weeks ahead, the district will share more information related to the reorganization, including staff and student assignments. We also expect to learn Assistant Principal assignments soon. Please know this work is being approached with great care and intention, with the goal of ensuring a smooth transition and a strong start to the year.
Finally, I hope to see many of you tonight at the Gates Culture Showcase. This event is a great opportunity to connect with families and truly appreciate what makes this a unique and awesome community!
Have a great weekend-
Allison

Boardwalk Winter Concert

Thanks to Katherine Greene, Mike Soo, Dr. Brendan Ferrari, and Peter Broggi for facilitlating a music concert at Boardwalk.  Students in grades 3rd-6th from both Gates and Douglas has the opportunity to hear their peers perform.   We also had a lot of families from both schools attend!

Enrichment Programs

Big thanks to the PTO for two enrichment activities that came to Gates these past couple of weeks.  Please see below:

Last week, students in grades K-2 met Oge Mora, an accomplished new author and illustrator.  Students AND staff truly appreciated this great experience!  I also thought I would include parts of an email I recieved from a staff member about the experience:
I wanted to extend a thank you for the fantastic author visit today, Oge Mora. Students were ecstatic to meet Oge Mora and she did not disappoint– she is energetic, funny, kind, and a great inspiration to our students. She loved our artists' self-portraits that we created in Library/Media class and even drew us a poodle.  I'll end with a quote Oge Mora shared today: "stories are everywhere!"

This past Wednesday, students in 5th and 6th grade attending a session on understanding our differences, with a specific focus on dyslexia.  Student engaged in a discussion with a presenter who share her story about growing up with dyslexia and how she became a writer.  I think the the statement she said that will stick with me is, "Dyslexia is the greatest gift I never wanted."   If you have a 5th or 6th grade students, please be sure to ask them about the presentation.  If you would like to continue this conversation at home, here is a resource that was shared: Learn More About Learning Disabilities.

Message from Mrs. Worth, Gates Assistant Principal

Last Thursday, I had the chance to join Ms. Conley’s 6th grade class for a snowshoeing adventure around the school, and it did not disappoint. The afternoon began with lots of laughs as many students needed help getting their snowshoes on before heading out into the deep snow for a loop around the building. Along the way there were plenty of tumbles, teamwork, and good spirits, with students quick to help each other back up and keep going. A huge thank you to Ms. Reed, our PE teacher, for making this experience possible and giving students the opportunity to try an outdoor winter activity that many had never experienced before.

-Mrs. Worth

Conversations about food and body image often start earlier than families expect. When kids worry about what they eat or how their bodies look, it can be hard to know what to say.

Join our next free family webinar to learn simple, supportive ways to help your child:

  • Build a healthy relationship with food
  • Talk about body image and confidence in age-appropriate ways
  • Navigate everyday conversations about food and body image

This session will be led by Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Consultant, Dana Sedlak, LCSW, who will share practical tools and everyday language families can use right away.
