Principal’s Message

We have had a few busy weeks at Gates!  Last week's ice cream social was a big success and a big thanks to the PTO for organizing such a great event for our families and alum!  In addition, our 6th grade students are having a social today as their end of year event.  If your student is planning on attending, please remember this is NOT a drop off event and a parent needs to stay at the school.

We have another great event coming up on May 20th.  Celia Knight has organized another Celebrate the Arts night for families to come in and see all the amazing art work our students have created!  If you are free, please be sure to come by!
In addition, as I shared a few weeks ago, below is our time line for beginning discussions with students.  Please be sure to have spoken with your student over the next couple of weeks to make sure they have heard this information from their trusted adult at home versus a peer.
  • By End of May: We recommend that families have had a conversation at home. Our hope is that your children hear about these changes first from you, their primary source of comfort, rather than from a peer at school. We know families are in different places regarding what they’ve shared, and we want to give you the space to lead those initial discussions.

  • During June: The school will begin structured conversations. In our morning meetings, we will read books about change and discuss how transitions feel.

In addition, teachers are starting to organize their classrooms for packing which could elicit questions from students.  We are being mindful this month to make sure our classrooms remain minimally changed, but as we get closer to June students will begin to see items packed in boxes.  Learning spaces will not be disrupted, but there will be signs of packing.

Finally, I saved the best for last, THANK YOU for an amazing teacher appreciation last week! You truly made a lot of teachers and staff happy with your thoughtful gifts and daily surprises.  😊

I hope each of you enjoys the nice weather this weekend!

Moving Out of the School District
If you are planning on moving out of the school district next year, please email Julia Rigo, jrigo@abschools.org, to let her know your plans.  This information is essential as the district is balancing classrooms across the district.  Thank you for your assistance.

Half Days - May 22nd and Last Week of School
Friday, May 22nd is a half day.  Please be sure to update pick up patrol if your dismissal plan is different than your typical Friday default plan.

In addition,  Monday, June 22nd, Tuesday, June 23rd, Wednesday, June 24th, and Thursday, June 25th are all half days.  Please be sure to update your dismissal plans in Pick Up Patrol if it is going to be different from your default plan for that day of the week.

Cereal Box Challenge- Message from 6th Grade Students

We’re collecting EMPTY cereal boxes for an upcoming Cereal Box Domino Challenge on Monday 6/22! Families are invited to send in empty cereal boxes between now and June 18. Boxes of all sizes and brands are welcome — the more we collect, the bigger and more exciting our domino chain will be! Please remind your students to leave the boxes outside of their classrooms and the 6th graders will come around and collect them!

Thank you for helping us make this fun school-wide challenge a success!
